Story of Prambanan Shiva Temple in Indonesia

It is said that once upon a time there was a demon king named Prabu Baka who ruled Java. He had a very beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang. A man named Bandung Bondowoso wanted to marry Roro Jonggrang, but Roro Jonggrang did not want to. Roro Jonggrang put forward conditions for her to refuse Bandung Bondovoso’s marriage proposal.

The condition was that Bandung Bondovoso had to make one thousand sculptures in one night. Only if he does so will Roro Jonggrang marry him. To fulfill the condition, Bandung Bondovoso made 999 idols in one night and was about to make the last one. Seeing this, Roro Jonggrang set fire to the rice fields of the entire city and made it as bright as day. Due to this Bandung Bondovoso could not make the last idol after being cheated and losing the bet.When Bandung Bondovoso learned the truth, he became furious and cursed Roro Jonggrang to become the last idol. In the Prambanan temple, the same idol of Roro Jonggrang is worshiped as Goddess Durga.


Local people say Roro Jonggrang Temple


Due to the legend of this temple being associated with Roro Jonggrang, the local people here also know this temple by the name of Roro Jonggrang Temple. Roro Jonggrang Temple or Prambanan Temple is an important center of devotion for Hindus as well as for the local people. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are all three enshrined here.


The Prambanan temple of Indonesia has three main temples – one of Lord Brahma, one of Lord Vishnu, and one of Lord Shiva. The faces of the idols of all the Gods are towards the east. In front of every main temple, there is a temple related to it in the west direction. This temple is dedicated to the vehicles of the gods. There is a swan temple for Lord Brahma, Garuda for Lord Vishnu, and Nandi for Lord Shiva. Apart from these, there are many other temples built in the complex. This Temple is very big and beautiful

This temple is in the middle of the three deities’ temples. There are four rooms inside the Shiva temple. One of which has a huge idol of Lord Shiva, the other has the idol of Lord Shiva’s disciple Agastya, the third has the idol of Mother Parvati and the fourth has the idol of Lord Ganesha. To the north of the Shiva temple is the temple of Lord Vishnu and to the south is the temple of Lord Brahma.


Ramayana is encarved on the walls of the temple. The beauty and texture of the Prambanan temple are worth seeing. The walls of the temple also have paintings from the Hindu epic Ramayana. These pictures depict the story of Ramayana. This artwork done on the walls of the temple makes this temple even more beautiful.
