Along with Lord Shiva, an idol of a goddess is also installed in this temple. That idol is worshiped as Goddess Durga. There is a story behind the establishment of the goddess here. It is said that once upon a time there was a demon king named Prabu Baka who ruled Java. He had a very beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang. A man named Bandung Bondowoso wanted to marry Roro Jonggrang, but Roro Jonggrang did not want to. Roro Jonggrang put forward conditions for her to refuse Bandung Bondovoso’s marriage proposal.
The condition was that Bandung Bondovoso had to make one thousand sculptures in one night. Only if he does so will Roro Jonggrang marry him. To fulfill the condition, Bandung Bondovoso made 999 idols in one night and was about to make the last one. Seeing this, Roro Jonggrang set fire to the rice fields of the entire city and made it as bright as day. Due to this Bandung Bondovoso could not make the last idol after being cheated and losing the bet. When Bandung Bondovoso learned the truth, he became furious and cursed Roro Jonggrang to become the last idol. In the Prambanan temple, the same idol of Roro Jonggrang is worshiped as Goddess Durga.
