On the top of this temple, there is a chakra, Which is known as Neel Chakra. The chakra is made out of Ashtadhatu (eight metals) whose height is 11 feet 8 inches. The specialty of the Neel Chakra is that, if we look at it from any side, it appears facing towards us. When the devotees enter the temple from Singh Dwar, the sound of the Sea Waves stops, and it can be heard only when we get out of the temple.

According to history, In Satya Yuga, there was a king named Indrayumna, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. In other words, To show his affection to Lord Vishnu, he expresses a wish that he wants to build a temple for Lord Vishnu where he wished to install his idol.

But one of his doubts was that what would be the shape of the idol of God? In this context, he sought the help of Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma advised him that he should ask Lord Vishnu himself to solve this problem. According to Lord Brahma, the King did as said to him. He started doing severe penance of Lord Vishnu.

One Night Lord Vishnu came into the King’s dream and advised him that he should go to Puri and bring a Neem wood lying on the shore of the sea, And build an idol out of it. As per the instructions, the King brought that piece of wood, but he got into another problem, that he was not getting any sculptor to make an idol. And finally, Lord Vishwakarma came to his help. He met the King as a sculptor. He placed a condition in front of the king that no one is allowed to peep inside at the time of construction of the idol, The king accepted his condition and the construction of the idol began.

A few days passed, Suddenly the sound behind the door stopped, The King got worried as the sound from inside stopped. When the King opened the door to check the situation, he could see no one inside, except the incomplete idols. Those idols were of Lord Jagannath and his brother Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra. The king realized his mistakes and he apologized to Lord Vishnu

Lord Vishnu suggested to the King that he should install these idols in the temple. Therefore according to the Lord’s order, the same idols were installed in the temple. Dedicated to these three deities the festival of Rath Yatra is held in the month of Ashadha. Where the idols of these three are kept in three different chariots and taken out on procession.

The Chariot in which the idol of Lord Jagannath is kept is called Nandighosha. The chariot in which the idol of Lord Balabhadra is kept is called Taladhwaja. The chariot in which the idol of lord Subadhra is kept is called Darapadalana. Further, The procession is brought from Bada Danda to Shri Gundicha Temple. It is believed that a week before the visit, God is given rest and the temple is kept closed during those Seven Days. Devotees participate in millions in this journey. And they all get the privilege of pulling these chariots

The present temple is rebuilt from the 10th century onwards, on the site of an earlier temple, and begun by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the first of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
