There are 10 directions whose names and order are as follows- Urdhva, Ishan, Purva, Agneya, Dakshina, Nairitya, Paschim, Vyavya, Uttara, and Adho. There is also a middle direction. In this way, there were 11 directions in total. According to the Hindu religion, a deity has been assigned to each direction, which has been called ‘Digpals’, that is, the follower of those directions. Those who protect the directions.

1 .Urdhva Direction
Brahma is the deity of Urdhva Disha. This direction is of utmost importance. The sky itself is God. The person who prays with his face raised, there is an effect in his prayer. In this direction, throwing stones, spitting, throwing water, shouting, or abusing while facing upward means towards the sky is prohibited. This can result in death.
2. Northeast direction (Ishaan)
The place where East and North directions meet is called Northeast direction. According to Vastu, this place in the house is called Ishana kon. Ishan is also one of the names of Lord Shiva. Since the dominance of Lord Shiva and saffron is in the northeast direction, that is why this direction is called the northeast angle. This direction is ruled by the planets Jupiter and Ketu.

3. East (Purva)
After North East comes the number of East. When the sun is Uttarayan, it emerges from the northeast only, not from the east. The deity of this direction is Indra and Lord Surya. The east direction is till the lamps of Pitristhana.

There should be some open space and slope in the east direction of the house. The entire eastern area of the city and the house should be neat and clean. 4. Southeast direction (Aagneya)
The direction between south and east is called the southeast direction. Agni Dev is the presiding deity of this direction. Venus is the lord of this direction.

9. North direction (Uttar)

10. Adho Direction

Origin of the Digpals
According to the Varaha Purana, When Brahma was thinking about the idea of creation, at that time 10 daughters were born from his womb, out of which 6 were main and 4 were secondary.
- Purva: This is called the east direction.
- Agneyi: This is called the igneous direction.
- Dakshin: This is called the South direction.
- Nairuti: This is called Nairitya Di Sha.
- Paschim: This is called the direction in the west.
- Vayavi: This is called the Vayavya direction.
- Uttar: This is called the North direction.
- Ishaan: This is called Ishan Disha.
- Urdhva: This is called Urdhva DiSha.
- Adhas: This is called Adho direction.
Those girls bowed down to Brahma and asked him for a place to live and suitable husbands. Brahma said – ‘You people can go wherever you want to go. Very soon I will give you husbands accordingly.’ According to this, those girls departed in different directions. After this, Brahma created 8 digpals and called his daughters and gave one daughter each to each of the lokapals or digpals.

After that, they all went in their respective directions along with those girls. The names of these Digpals are listed below in the order of directions in the Puranas.
