There are 10 directions whose names and order are as follows- Urdhva, Ishan, Purva, Agneya, Dakshina, Nairitya, Paschim, Vyavya, Uttara, and Adho. There is also a middle direction. In this way, there were 11 directions in total. According to the Hindu religion, a deity has been assigned to each direction, which has been called ‘Digpals’, that is, the follower of those directions. Those who protect the directions.
10 Digpals of 10 directions
Brahma of Urdhva, Shiv of Ishan, Indra of East, Agni or Vahri of South, Yama of South, Nariti of Southwest, Varuna of West, Vayu and Marut of Vayavya, Kubera of North and Ananta of Adho.
1 .Urdhva Direction
Brahma is the deity of Urdhva Disha. This direction is of utmost importance. The sky itself is God. The person who prays with his face raised, there is an effect in his prayer. If the mother is sung according to the Vedas, then the mother will be taken from Brahma and the universe, and not from any other. You get everything by talking to him.
Vastu
In this direction, throwing stones, spitting, throwing water, shouting, or abusing while facing upward means towards the sky is prohibited. This can result in death.
2. Northeast direction (Ishaan)
The place where East and North directions meet is called Northeast direction. According to Vastu, this place in the house is called Ishana kon. Ishan is also one of the names of Lord Shiva. Since the dominance of Lord Shiva and saffron is in the northeast direction, that is why this direction is called the northeast angle. This direction is ruled by the planets Jupiter and Ketu.
Vastu
This part of the house, city, and body is the most sacred, so it should be kept clean and empty. Here water is established such as a well, bore ring, matka, or then the place of drinking water. Apart from this, this place can also be made a place of worship. It is prohibited to keep garbage, make a store, toilet, kitchen, etc., and do not keep iron ore as a heavy object in this place. This destroys wealth and creates misfortune.
3. East (Purva)
After North East comes the number of East. When the sun is Uttarayan, it emerges from the northeast only, not from the east. The deity of this direction is Indra and Lord Surya. The east direction is till the lamps of Pitristhana.
Vastu
There should be some open space and slope in the east direction of the house. The entire eastern area of the city and the house should be neat and clean. You can keep windows, lights, or doors in the house. This place should not have the room of the elders of the house and should not keep any heavy items. Don’t even make stairs here.
4. Southeast direction (Aagneya)
The direction between south and east is called the southeast direction. Agni Dev is the presiding deity of this direction. Venus is the lord of this direction.
Vastu
This direction in the house is a special place for keeping kitchen or fire related (electronic equipment etc.). It is necessary for the good health of the residents that the southeast corner should be architectural. There should not be a bedroom or study place in the southeast corner. The door of the house should not be in this direction either. Due to this, domestic discord is created and the health of the residents also remains bad.
5. South direction (Dakshin)
The presiding deity of the South direction is Bhagwan Yamraj. Building according to the rules of Vastu in the south direction brings happiness, prosperity, and prosperity.

According to Vastu, the main door should not be in the south direction. In this direction, one should not keep heavy respect for the house. There should be no doors and no windows in this direction. 6. Southwest direction (Nairitya)
The place in the middle of the south and west direction is called southwest. This direction is in the Aadhi Patya of Nairit Dev. The lords of this direction are Rahu and Ketu.

7. West Direction (Paschim)
The deity of the west direction is Varun and Saturn is the lord of this direction. This direction is the symbol of fame, fortune, and reputation. The main door of the house should not be in this direction.
Vastu
If there is a door in the west, then do Vastu remedies. If there is a door, keep the door well decorated. Do not let any kind of cracks appear on the walls around the door and keep its color dark. There should not be a bathroom, toilet, or bedroom in the west of the house. This place can neither be kept too open nor too closed.
8. Northwest Direction (Vayavya)
North and West direction is in the middle of the direction. The deity of this direction is Vayudev and in this direction air element predominates.
Vastu
This direction affects your relationships with neighbors, friends, and relatives. According to Vastu Gyan, good and useful relations can be made with them. There should not be any kind of hindrance in this direction. Keep the space of this direction light. Make this direction beautiful with windows, doors, bells, water, trees, and plants.
9. North direction (Uttar)
The ruler of the North direction is Ravana’s brother Kuber. Kuber is also called the God of wealth. Mercury is the lord of the North direction. The north direction has also been called the mother’s place.
Vastu
It is very good if the main door of the house is in the north and north direction. Leaving a vacant place or leaving raw land in this direction is a sign of wealth and prosperity. Building toilets, and kitchens in this direction, throwing garbage, and keeping this direction dirty destroy wealth and create misfortune.
10. Adho Direction
The deity of Adho Disha is Sheshanaga, who is also known as Anant. Vastu of the earth is pacified before the construction of the house. Whether or not you want to choose an earth with good energy. The basement of the house, secret passages, wells, cisterns, etc. represent this direction.
Vastu
Even if the soil of the earth’s level is drunk then it becomes very good and beneficial. The land of your house should be clean and clear. The land which is high in the east and southeast and sunken in the west and north-west, all the troubles of those who live on such a land go away.
Origin of the Digpals
According to the Varaha Purana, When Brahma was thinking about the idea of creation, at that time 10 daughters were born from his womb, out of which 6 were main and 4 were secondary.
- Purva: This is called the east direction.
- Agneyi: This is called the igneous direction.
- Dakshin: This is called the South direction.
- Nairuti: This is called Nairitya Di Sha.
- Paschim: This is called the direction in the west.
- Vayavi: This is called the Vayavya direction.
- Uttar: This is called the North direction.
- Ishaan: This is called Ishan Disha.
- Urdhva: This is called Urdhva DiSha.
- Adhas: This is called Adho direction.
Those girls bowed down to Brahma and asked him for a place to live and suitable husbands. Brahma said – ‘You people can go wherever you want to go. Very soon I will give you husbands accordingly.’ According to this, those girls departed in different directions. After this, Brahma created 8 digpals and called his daughters and gave one daughter each to each of the lokapals or digpals.

After that, they all went in their respective directions along with those girls. The names of these Digpals are listed below in the order of directions in the Puranas.
