An excellent architect and craftsman, Maya demon is mentioned prominently in both the texts Mahabharata and Ramayana. Is. Mayasura is also called the king of demons.
Mayasura was the ruler of the Maya nation currently known as Meerut. It is believed that he was such an effective and miraculous architect that he could even melt stones for his construction.
According to the Uttarakanda of the Ramayana, the demon Maya was the son of sage Kashyap and his wife Diti and the father of Mandodari, the wife of the demon king Ravana.
Ravana’s wife Mandodari’s mother Hema was an Apsara and her father was an Asura. Being the daughter of an Apsara, Mandodari was very beautiful and she was also half demon.
Although according to Uttarkand of Ramayana, Ravana’s beautiful city, Lanka, was built by Vishwakarma, it is also believed that Lanka was built by Ravana’s father-in-law and the best architect Mayasur himself.
Mention in Ramayana and Mahabharata
Apart from Ramayana, mention of Mayasura is also found in Mahabharata. Krishna and Arjun had sacrificed their lives to Mayasura while destroying the Khandava forest during Ajnata Vaas.It is mentioned in Mahabharata that during the burning of Khandava forest, Arjun had given protection to Maya Danav. Being pleased with this, the Maya demon, along with the promise of Nirramaan of Indraprastha, took Arjun and Shri Krishna to a ruined forest cave and gave them the Devadat conch, the Maya vessel, the chariot of the ancient King Som, the Komod Gada which was harder than a thunderbolt, also Daityaraj gifts the Gandiva bow and other quiver of Vrishparva to the Pandavas.
Mayasura became indebted to Arjuna and promised to render his services to him. To fulfill this promise, Mayasura, an expert in mirages and illusions, created a beautiful but false architecture in Indraprastha Palace, which is also called Maya Sabha.
Duryodhana had also fallen into the pond after getting entangled in this web of illusion of Vastukari, because he had considered the pond as land.
The demon Maya had built three cities of gold, silver and iron called Tripura. Tripura was later destroyed by Lord Shiva himself. The Maya demon had created these three kingdoms, Tripura, for Tarakasura. Tarakasura had handed over these three kingdoms to his three sons Tarakaksh, Kamalaksh and Vidyunmali.
Along with being an architect, Mayasur was also an astronomer. ‘Surya Siddhantham’ was also composed by Mayasura, which he himself learned from the Sun God. This principle proves to be very helpful in making predictions related to astronomical astrology.
After learning the Surya Siddhanta and conveying it to his disciples, Maya danav instructed them that this knowledge should be kept a complete secret, so that they do not have to face any kind of competition.
Father of mayan civilization
Maya danav is also considered the father of the ancient Maya civilization of South America. Mayasura is seen as the ancestor of the Maya people.
It is said that the same knowledge and extraordinary talent that the Maya demon had, was also possessed by the people of Maya civilization.
