Why is Rishi Panchami fast important for women?


Rishi Panchami has great importance in Hinduism. The day of Rishi Panchami is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Panchami of the month of Bhadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. On this day women fast and seek forgiveness from God for the sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. This day falls on the next day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Hindu women worship with great enthusiasm. According to the scriptures, women are considered impure like Chandalini on the first day of menstruation, Brahmaghatini on the second day, and Dhobin on the third day. After this, after bathing on the fourth day, they become pure. Meanwhile, Rishi Panchami is worshiped to get rid of the sins committed by the woman knowingly or unknowingly.


Importance of Rishi Panchami

Sapta Rishis are worshiped on the day of this fast which is especially important for women. In the scriptures, this fast has been said to destroy the sins of women and give them better health. It is said that if a woman observes this fast with full faith, then all her sins are absolved.

How to start fasting?

  • First of all, wake up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  • Now cover the puja room with cow dung and make the idol of Saptarishi and Goddess Arundhati here.
  • After this, establish the Kalash at this place. After establishment, worship the Kalash with turmeric, kumkum, sandalwood, flowers, and rice.
  • “Kashyapotrirbhardvajo Vishwamitroya Gautam: Jamadagnirvasisthashcha Saptaite Rishay Smrita: Grihnantvardhya Maya Dattam Tushta Bhavat Me Sada.” Chant the mantra.
  • Now after listening to the story of Rishi Panchami, offer food to the seven priests considering them as Saptarishis. After the meal, give them Dakshina and after the puja, feed the cow also.


The day of Rishi Panchami is considered to be Vedadin. The importance of this day is that the ancient sages who sacrificed their entire life and created immortal texts like the Vedas should be remembered with gratitude. Take only tuber-root diet on this day

On this day, women should brush their teeth in the morning with the wooden teeth of the Aghada plant. After taking a bath before worship, resolve that I am observing this fast to please the Saptarishis including Arundhati, to remove the defects caused by unknowingly touching during menstruation. Make eight small parts of rice on a wooden plate and keep eight betel nuts on it, Kashyapadi, seven sages, and Arundhati worship them by invoking them. Take a tuber-root diet only on this day. Do not eat anything of the labor done by the bull. It has been told so. On the second day, Kashyapadi seven sages and Arundhati should be immersed in the form of eight parts of rice. This fast can be observed after the age of 12 years or 50 years. This fast can be continued even after Udyapan.
