One day Arjun went to Rameshwaram. There he met Hanumanji. Seeing Ramsetu, Arjun said that if I were there, I would have built this bridge with arrows. Hearing this, Hanuman said that the bridge made of your arrows cannot bear the weight of even a single person. Then Arjuna said that if the bridge built by me breaks due to your walking, then I will enter the fire. Hanumanji accepted that and said If your arrow bridge would tolerate only my two steps, I will accept defeat.
After that Arjun made a bridge of arrows. As soon as Hanumanji took his first step, the bridge started to waver and broke. Seeing this, Arjun started burning himself by lighting a fire. Only then Shri Krishna appeared and asked Arjuna to build a bridge by taking the name of Shri Ram. Arjun did the same. Took a step again with Hanumanji but this time the bridge did not break. Hanuman then told Arjuna that he would protect him till the end of the war. That’s why Hanuman sat in the flag of Arjuna’s chariot in the Kurukshetra War and protected him till the end of the Mahabharata War.
