Why did Lord Vishnu Engage in Yoga Nidra?
We all know that Lord Vishnu resides in Vaikuntha along with Mata Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu resides with Mata Lakshmi on a serpent bed in a modest ocean called Kshira Sagar. Vaikuntha is the eternal and eternal abode of Lord Vishnu. Mother Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu leave Vaikunth Dham in Chaturya month and reside in Hades. For 4 months of Chaturmas, the abode of Lord Vishnu becomes Patal Lok. And for this time Lord Vishnu remains absorbed in Yoga Nidra.
Evidence of Lord Vishnu Yoga Nidra is obtained from various scriptures.

Why Did Maa Laxmi Tie Rakhi To King Bali
But without Lord Vishnu, the maintenance and operation of the world are not possible. So Goddess Lakshmi and the entire deity got worried. It was pretty necessary for the Lord to return to Vaikuntha Dham. For this reason, Mata Lakshmi along with all the deities reached Hades. Mata Lakshmi disguised herself as a poor old woman and tied Rakhi to King Bali. hence this mantra is chanted while tying Rakhi.
MANTRA
येन बद्धो बली राजा, दानवेंद्रो महाबल।
तेन त्वामनुबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल।।MEANING OF MANTRA
“I bind you with the same Rakshabandhan that will protect you, with the same Rakshabandhan that tied the great mighty demon king Bali”.
After tying rakhi to King Bali, Mata Lakshmi asks King Bali to take her husband Narayan back to Vaikuntha from there. but we all know how devout Lord Vishnu is, but King Bali continued his promise. Told God that you will reside in Hades only from Shukla Paksha of Asadha month to Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. These four months are known as Chaturmas.
What is Chaturmas?
During these 4 months which we call Chaturmas Lord Vishnu does not reside in Vaikuntha but in Hades. This time is from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi. During this time, Lord Vishnu gets absorbed in complete Sleep Yoga which is called Nidra of Lord Vishnu. According to the beliefs, no auspicious work is done during this time period.
When the Lord wakes up from Yoga Nidra, then any auspicious work is done only after taking His blessings.
